DAX PAX v067-USB Tutorial Using the "DAX ZISO Loader USB Tutorial Pack" by DragonUK

~=<>=-

1. Copy the files in the "PUT THESE ON YOUR MEMORY STICK" folder to the root of your Memory Stick (Duh)

2. After you've copied them to your PSP, copy the folder in the "PUT THIS ON YOUR DESKTOP" folder to your desktop, or anywhere, it doesn't really matter.

3. Now load up DAX with the usb cable connected, Windows will say it found a new device.

4. a) Now onto installing the drivers, select the option to manually install, and chose the option to specify the location of the needed driver.
b) Click browse and goto your Desktop, or where you put the "PC_Driver" that was in the "PUT THIS ON YOUR DESKTOP" folder.
c) Go into the "PC_Driver" folder and select the "PSP.inf" file.
Now, continue through the steps till it is installed.

5. Now your PSP has the driver needed for USB use with DAXZISO installed correctly.

6. Copy the file cygwin1.dll included in this rar to your windows/system32 directory.
If you don't know where this is, you shouldent even be trying this...

7. Ok, if you've gotten this far, then good, your almost done.
First, make sure to rename the folder containing your ISO's (Or at least the ones you want your PSP to read) to "ISO".

8. a) Press Triangle to Exit DAXZISO and go back to the XMB. After this is done, enable USB connectivity via your Normal USB Connection screen
b) There will be a popup asking if your want to "use the program provided on your device", press OK.
c) You've probly noticed by now a PSP icon has popped up in your system tray.
d) This is the terminal program that runs the USB connectivity. To launch it repeat the first two lines of this step.
e) Right click the icon and browse to the folder that CONTAINS your "ISO" folder and select OK.
f) If you have trouble in the above step, you can manually edit this path in the "Opt.ini" file the the "DAXUSB" folder on your memory stick.
g) By default it's set to the C drive, so if you want to, just put your "ISO" folder in your hard drive's root.

9. After this is done exit normal USB mode and start up DAXZISO again,

10. a) The iSOs on your pc should appear in DAX, but they will be mixed up with the iSOs on your PSP memorycard.
b) So its best to call the iSOs on your pc something like game_usb.iso with a USB tag or something.

11. Now select your game, use a direct load option, and then your game should start and play

12. As long as the PSP icon remains in your system tray, you can go directly into DAXZISO to access your ISO's via USB.

If it disappers simply connect via the normal USB link in the XMB again to re-launch it.

Well done.

Note: There is more chances of the iSO working if you put "v" before the ISO's name: for example, Tales.iso -> vTales.iso.

Playing YouTube Videos on the Sony PSP

This is my latest obsession. Since I travel for around 2.5 hrs during my office commute, I need to keep myself entertained. Till now the Sony PSP was being used to play the odd game or to listen to some music. I finally managed to get all the pieces together to start encoding videos for the PSP on Debian GNU/Linux. This got boring after a while as I didn't have new content to keep me entertained on a daily basis.

The next step was to get the videos from YouTube to play on the PSP. This actually turned out easier than I expected. Here's how I managed to do it,

  • Get Mozilla Firefox.
  • Install the "VideoDownloader" extension.
  • Install ffmpeg on Debian. apt-get install ffmpeg. My ffmpeg version is the one pulled from the ffmpeg subversion repo. This is on Debian unstable mind you with the debian-multimedia repo's.
  • Go to YouTube/Google Videos and view a video, click on the VideoDownlaoder icon on the Status bar of Firefox, this will inturn popup a window with the link to the video being currently played. Right click and "Save the link" on your PC.
  • Videos will be saved in the FLV (Flash Video) format. You can play them using VLC.
  • You need to re-encode these videos to the PSP's aspect ratio. Here's the ffmpeg one-liner which will do it for you.

ffmpeg -i $input_file -f psp -r 29.970 -s 320x240 -b 768 -ar 24000 -ab 32 $output_file

$input_file :: is the name of the Video you just downloaded (.flv)

$output_file :: is the name of the output file for the PSP which should be of the type M4V000XX.MP4 , where XX is a random number.

If everything goes well, stick that into a bash script like so:

=====start=====
#! /bin/sh
input_file=$1
output_file=$2
echo $input_file
echo $output_file
ffmpeg -i $input_file -f psp -r 29.970 -s 320x240 -b 768 -ar 24000 -ab 32 $output_file

=====end=====

And you can invoke the script as ./psp_enc.sh ~/Videos/youtube.flv M4V00010.MP4

The whole setup should also be possible on Fedora and Ubuntu too. The next best thing I discovered is
ffmpeg2theora, very useful command-line tool if you have a set of divx files and worried that you might loose the ability to play them due to patent problems. ffmpeg2theora will allow you to re-encode your videos to the Ogg Theora format which is an open format and widely supported by almost all the players on Linux.

Also new to this release is support for Windows Media Audio (WMA) format — WMA files stored on Memory Stick Duo media can now be played by the PSP’s music player software. WMA9 Professional, Lossless and DRM-protected WMA files are not supported, however.

Sony PSP 2.0 to 1.5 Downgrader - Step by Step Instructions

YOU MUST BE RUNNING VERSION 2.0 IN ORDER TO USE THE DOWNGRADER. UPDATE YOUR FIRMWARE TO THE LATEST VERSION BEFORE ATTEMPTING THIS

1. Start your PSP and activate a USB connection

2. From your PC, open up the PSP in your Windows Explorer and remove any copies of h.bin from the root folder of your PSP. (That is NOT in any directory on the memory stick)

3. Navigate to the PSP/PHOTO folder on your PC and delete any instances of pong.tif, overflow.tif, frame_buffer.png or any other file which you have used for any 2.0 exploits.

4. Extract the overflow.tif file from the MPHDowngrader.zip file and put it into your PSP/PHOTO folder on the memory stick.

5. Extract the h.bin and index.dat files from the MPHDowngrader.zip file and put these into the root of your memory stick. (Please note that this is x:\ [where x: is the drive letter your psp is assigned when using a USB connection] and NOT x:\PSP\ <- VERY IMPORTANT)

6. Extract the EBOOT.PBP file from the other MPH zip file and put that into a folder on your memory stick under PSP\GAME\UPDATE (you will need to create the UPDATE folder if it doesnt already exist)

So far we should have the following files on the memory stick

Code:
root
|
|- h.bin
|- index.dat
|
|-PSP
|
|-GAME
| |
| |-UPDATE
| |-EBOOT.PBP
|
|-PHOTO
|-overflow.tif
7. Press Circle on your PSP to exit USB mode and then navigate to the Photos section from the menu on the psp.

8. Press X to open up the photo's section and then the screen will turn black and some numbers and letters (hex addresses) will appear on the screen - this is normal so dont panic. You should see the memory stick flash for a few seconds as well.

9. Once all memory stick activity has finished, shut down your PSP by holding down the power. You may need to hold this for up to 15 seconds to shut off the PSP

10. Start up your PSP and activate USB mode

11. If you check the root folder on your PSP you should have a few new files and a file called index.dat.bak - If you do not have index.dat.bak - go back to step 1 and start again as you've done something wrong

12. If the file exists then press circle to exit USB mode and then navigate to the Game menu on the PSP and scroll down to Memory Stick. Press X and then you should see the PSP Firmware Update 1.5 listed in there. Press X again to launch it.

13. When the update appears follow the instructions on the update to start the process. You will see a percentage bar appear which will get to 99%

14. An error message WILL appear saying the update has failed and to contact Sony Support. This is normal so dont panic.

15. Power down the PSP by holding down the power switch for up to 15 seconds. Once the PSP has shut down, start it up again.

16. A message will appear on the screen claiming that the system settings have been corrupted. Press the circle button "O" in order to create new settings.

17. The PSP will reboot itself and start up again. You will need to enter your Time Zone and name again. Once you've done this, welcome to your happy new 1.5 PSP!

Enterprising Hackers found how to downgrade the new 2.0 firmware for sony psp

Enterprising Hackers found how to downgrade the new 2.0 firmware for sony psp

Those enterprising hackers who found their hacks unusable in newer PSPs due to a firmware update can fix that issue now.

Howard Stringer's crew at Sony Computer Entertainment is not going to be pleased about the MPH firmware downgrade. The Register and other sites disclosed the availability of the downgrade utility.

While the vast majority of hackers were creating useful utilities and finding uses beyond game and movie playing on the PSP, there were plenty of people trading PSP games online. Downgrading the firmware probably reverses Sony's efforts to thwart that piracy.

Utilities haven't been the only reason for hacking the PSP. A variety of emulators, notably one for GameBoy Advance games, allow releases for other platforms to be played on the PSP.

File sharing has been another popular focus for PSP hackers. Methods for swapping videos and MP3 files between PSPs can be found online. Meanwhile, someone at Sony will probably have to spend a bit of time researching this downgrade, and find a way to thwart it in a new release.

10 Things To Fix on the Sony PSP

This is a list of things I'd like Sony to fix for the PSP, to truly make it into the ultimate handheld console. Some have already been hinted at, some are small annoyances I would personally like removed and some are my own ideas of extending the functionality of the PSP.

Read on for the full list.

A couple of obvious things haven't been added to this list, as I don't think it's necessary to mention them since everyone already has voiced their concerns over and over again. These are things like battery times, dead pixels, price tag on the PSP itself as well as games, not being able to create UMD's etc.

The list isn't sorted in any way, neither by importance to me or by how big the change is.

  1. Remove automatic loading of games, as well as jumping to the game menu when the UMD has loaded. If I want to play a game when I start my PSP I will select it, when I don't want I shouldn't have to go through the hassle of jumping out of the game first.
  2. Better text input, a keyboard would be nice, but also a better software solution, possibly including dictionaries, like the T9 function on cell phones.
  3. Easier way to add videos, without having to rename them and place them in a secret special folder. As well as the ability to play full size videos that utilizes the entire beautiful screen.
  4. Personalization and customization of the XMB menu system, choosing colors, background images, possibly even rearranging the options and adding new ones, like shortcuts to functionality that lies deeper in the menu.
  5. Better playlist functionality for music, browsing by artist and album, as well as creating internal playlists easily.
  6. I'd love to be able to hook up the PSP to a television to be able to play games on a full screen, to watch photo slideshows and movies.
  7. Basic PIM functionality would be great, a calendar, todo list, address book etc.
Syncing with cell phones through the IR port, or something, anything, to make use of it!
  8. Letting anyone create programs for the PSP, this would open up a whole new world of things to do with the PSP.
  9. Web surfing on the PSP would be nice, but isn't a necessity.

Watching movies on the Sony PSP from Memory Stick Pro Duo

This is a short introduction on how to use the PSP to watch videos from the Memory Stick. It contains information on where to save the video files as well as how to create videos that can be used on the PSP.

To watch videos on the PSP you will have to create the directory for them yourself as the PSP doesn't do this for you when it formats the Memory Stick.

Create a directory in the root of the PSP, where there is a psp directory and two .ind files. This directory should be called "MP_ROOT", without the quotes. In this directory you will have to create another directory called "100MNV01", also without quotes. This is where the video files should be saved for the PSP to find them. The reason they are saved like this is presumably because that's where video files are saved on Sonys digital video cameras that also use Memory Sticks. It's also very important that they are created with capital letters, like shown, or the PSP won't recognize the directories.

Use the following commands to create the directories:

> mkdir /mnt/psp/MP_ROOT
> mkdir /mnt/psp/MP_ROOT/100MNV01

This isn't all though. The PSP can only show movies saved in the MPEG4 format, that usually has the file extension .mp4. The videos need to be saved in MPEG-4 Simple Profile at 320x240 resolution to work properly it seems. The files also needs to be named in a specific way, they have to be called "M4V03770.MP4" or something similar. That is "M4V" followed by five digits and with the extension .MP4. It is also very important that all letters are in CAPS or the PSP won't find the files.

PSIX’s digital camera linkup and media playback for the PSP

It wouldn’t surprise us if any day now Sony came strolling along with a slew of new PSP accessories and peripherals, but until we get the real deal PSP camera (or any of the other things Sony’s been talking about like a keyboard, mouse, Flash support, email client, etc.), we’re gonna have to stick with projects like PSIX. With it they’ve successfully connected a Sony Ericsscon P800/900/910i with a modified data cable and run the camera on the thing, in addition to loading a rather slick looking custom desktop with audio and video playback functions. read full detaill...

Sony PSP 2.0 firmware cracked?

A new video has been posted to a popular PSP homebrew site that appears to show a homemade version of tic-tac-toe loading on a PSP that has been upgraded to version 2.0 firmware. While the game does not actually run, the video demonstrates that it’s possible to load a homebrew program from a memory stick, presumably by tricking the PSP into thinking that the program is the version 2.1 upgrade. At any rate, it’s a promising start for homebrew development on the latest firmware, which, besides tighter security, contains a number of new features. Read full story...

How to send e-mail using your Sony PSP using the new Email Client

Sony PSP To Get Email Client?

GameSpot has some details from an Interview of SCE Software Platform Chief Izumi Kawanishi that was published in Japanese magazine Famitsu.

Besides making the Sony PSP browser more usable and improve direct video downloads and also maybe introduce streaming video, the most interesting discussed future feature is an email client for the PSP. Sony actually thinks beyond text emails. The company considers to introduce video and audio communication.

For video communication obviously a video camera is necessary. This would imply Sony is planning to come up with a Video camera accessory for the Sony PSP. To do text emails on the Sony PSP a keyboard is also necessary. The PSP keyboard that surfaced a while ago, is supposed to ship end of October.

Sony PSP processing speed is capped from 333Mhz to 222Mhz

When Sony listed the PlayStation Portable’s technical specs last year, the processor was listed at a speed of 333MHz. However, at last month’s GDC a Sony America exec dropped the fact that currently, the PSP’s processing speed is being capped at 222MHz.

We were just wondering why Sony would cap their processing speed? Why keep a full 33.3 percent of the handheld’s processing power in check?

Sony PSP with 50 gig hard drive will be available soon

There is a lot of discussion regarding the new Sony PSP accessories. One report says that Sony's new PSP portable gaming system due out in March, could come with a 50GB hard drive by the year 2006.

The announcement came out when one speaker, Michael Pachter of Wedbush Morgan Securities said that Sony is working on a flavor of the PSP that includes an internal, 50-gigabyte hard drive. A prototype of the new portable might be out by year-end, but mass production of the new device probably would not happen until next year, he said.

Could this mobile multimedia device viably challenge the iPod?

With hard drive prices coming down, this is no surprise. What is hard to believe is that Sony will be able to fit a drive of that size into the PSP. Sure a 5GB drive might make more sense because of its physical dimensions, but 50GB seems a little too far fetched.

Should you update your Sony PSP with firmware 2.0?

Along with many others, I was pretty excited when the Sony PSP was announced, but at the time of its release I did not purchase it because I didn't have the funds available and wanted to see what this baby could really do besides games. After obtaining some mobile device funding and reading that PSP owners were able to run emulators from various consoles and handhelds, surf the Internet via Wipeout Pure, and watch movies off the Memory Stick, I went to Craigslist.org and picked one up from a local seller at a good price. One specific detail that I had the seller check first was the firmware version on the device. He confirmed it was 1.5, meaning that it was a U.S. model that had not been upgraded since it was purchased. Read full story..
